Coding Tutorials

FanUpdate

A cool, easy to use blogging script that allows you to create blogs with optional comments (which could be personalised with gravatars)! The instructions are basically on the FanUpdate Site, but I (and some other people) found difficulties/requested a tutorial, so here I am making a tutorial =)

You will require PHP4, MySQL (you'd normally have these if you have your own domain or sub-domain, just ask your host). This tutorial is for FanUpdate 2.2 but could be adapted to other versions.

1. Download the script from this site.
2. Unzip the folder and rename the folder to fanupdate.
3. Now, create a MySQL database in your cpanel. Or you could ask your host to kindly set one up for you. I have called my database name USER_database (incase you're stuck with what to call it).
4. Once you have your MySQL database details, open up your fanupdate folder and look for blog-config.php. Open this file up and edit where it says "ADMIN VARIABLES" and "DATABASE VARIABLES".
In "admin variables", make up your desired FanUpdate username and password for you to log in later.
In "database variables", add your correct MySQL database details in between the apostrophes on the right hand side. For example: NOT where it says $fanupdate['dbuser'], $fanupdate['dbpass'] ...
Note: Most database hosts are called localhost.

5. Upload the whole FanUpdate folder to your FTP server (preferably in your root directory so it would be www.yoursite.com/fanupdate).
6. Now we need to install, so go to http://yoursite.com/fanupdate/install.php.
If you see weird errors, it most likely means that the details in your blog-config.php file is not correct. Check your MySQL database details or create a new database and edit the details on the page again.
7. Edit the options you can see in the installation page, like the link of your fanupdate blog, whether you want a gravatar or not, time zone etc. Click "install" at the bottom of the page.
8. Once successfully installed, delete the install.php from your fanupdate folder in your FTP.
9. Log in to fanupdate by going on http://yoursite.com/fanupdate (sign in using the username and password you wrote on the blog-config.php page).
10. You're now in your admin section! On the left hand side, it shows your stats and help options. Click on How to display your blog link and post the Display Code on the left side to the page you would like to display your blogs (normally in your index.php page).

Optionals
CSS: You can copy the CSS Rules section on the right side of this page http://yoursite/fanupdate/get-code.php to your own seperate CSS. This may make your fanupdate look neater. Edit the CSS any way you want. You could always delete some sections of the fanupdate CSS if you feel it has no use.
Catorgories: To add a catorgory, click on Catergories at the top of the page and click on "New Catorgory". Add as many catorgories you want which you think you will use in relation to your blog's subject. This will be useful for you, and your visitors to view any particular blog subjects they want to read.
Templates: To view the template section, go onto Options >> Templates. You can edit any section here, like delete the long paragraph before the comment form in the "comment_form_template" and add your own personal message there. I suggest you keep the gravatar link up there if you want to use gravatars for your blog comments. You can change the div id to something else if it collides with your site coding. Make sure you keep the "Powered by FanUpdate" link in your footer template for credit of the script.
Smilies: To get smilies on your blogs and comments, go to Options >> Smilies. Go back to your FTP and upload your smilies in this folder: public_html >> fanupdate >> img
Now in your admin, select from the dropdown list your smilies and add a shortcut for you to use for your blog.
Gravatars: If you decide to want gravatars enabled with your blog comments, you may not want the 'ugly' fanupdate default gravatar. To change it, find/make yourself an gravatar/avatar/icon (whatever you want to call it) which is 80 by 80 pixels. Save your new gravatar as gravatar.png. Make sure it is in .PNG format. Upload your gravatar to your FTP server >> fanupdate. You should get an option to replace the current gravatar, so click that you do want to replace. Now you should have your own gravatar as the default!
To get your visitors to use their own gravatar, you might want to put somewhere on your blog that will allow them sign up to http://gravatar.com with the email they use on the comments. The gravatar will show up every time they comment on your blog (and others!) with that specific email address they used to sign up with.
Test it all out by writing a quick blog and testing the comments and it should all look great :) Enjoy your new script!
